ATRIO in Villach is located a few kilometers from the Slovenian and Italian borders. We consistently implement the “senza confine” (“without borders”) operating principle at all contact points. The heart of the center and its main attraction is a 170-m² aerial image of the tri-country area in the center’s plaza.
Due to the soil and ground water conditions on site, ATRIO was built on thermally active piles that project up to 70 meters into the ground. They are used as energy piles for heating and cooling. Waste heat is pumped into the earth and stored. This covers nearly half of the center’s energy needs. ATRIO has reduced the center’s CO2 emissions by about 500 tons per year.
