SES shopping center ATRIO is located in Villach, in the south of the state of Carinthia, only a few kilometers from the Slovenian and Italian borders, in the heart of the Carinthia-Austria / Slovenia / Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The shopping destination with the cross-country appeal attracts many visitors from the neighboring countries. The center’s motto “senza confini”, which translates as “without borders” is consistently displayed at all points of contact, including its name, its architecture, its color schemes, its marketing, and its trilingual center operation. In 2008, ATRIO won the International Design and Development Award and was celebrated as the world’s most innovative shopping center. In 2009, ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) honored the center with the “Best-of-the-Best for Sustainable Design Award” as the world’s most sustainable shopping center. ATRIO Villach is a pioneer in its industry in ecological terms. It was built on thermally activated in-situ concrete piles that extend up to 70 meters into the ground and are used as energy piles to heat and cool the shopping center, achieving high CO2 savings and covering almost half of the required energy generation.

Transport Infrastructure

Located close to the Italian and Slovenian borders, ATRIO in Villach is ideally linked to the road network via its vicinity to the A2 and A10 highways. Local bus lines 1, 4, and 10 connect the shopping center to downtown Villach.

International Award Winner

ICSC Best-of-the-Best Award for Sustainable Design 2009

In 2009, ATRIO received the Best-of-the-Best Award for Sustainable Design in Las Vegas (USA), confirming its position as the world’s most sustainable shopping center in its category. Within a short time, it had become a role model in terms of sustainability and ecologically responsible behavior.

ICSC Solal Marketing Silver Award 2009, Las Vegas, USA

In 2009, ATRIO won the ICSC Solal Marketing Silver Award in the “Sales Promotion & Events” category, demonstrating that SES sets international standards, not only in architecture and sustainability, but also in terms of location marketing.

ICSC Int. Design and Development Award 2008, Phoenix, USA

ATRIO was awarded the most prestigious prize in its industry as the most innovative shopping center worldwide in 2008. The international jury was particularly impressed by the intercultural concept of “senza confini” that ATRIO has implemented at the border triangle of Austria, Slovenia, and Italy. The concept was planned and implemented by SES, all the way from the architectural design to the creation of flyers.

TRIGOS, 2009, Austria

In 2009, ATRIO was awarded the TRIGOS in the “Society” category in acknowledgment of its social and ecological commitment, in particular, its unique technology of resource-saving energy generation.

ICSC ReSource Award 2008, Amsterdam, Netherlands

ATRIO won the ReSource Award 2008, which honors sustainable behavior in the fields of environment, social affairs, and economic efficiency. Operator SES was the first, and is the only, European developer to receive the ReSource Award 2008.
